Blinds By DB was started in 2008 by Dan Benesh, a local entrepreneur. As a young adult, Dan dabbled in renovation work and decided to add window coverings to his list of offerings. Dan researched suppliers and decided to go with Comfortex, a New York-based company. Comfortex is an independent subsidiary of Hunter Douglas, the best and most-respected name in window coverings. From 2008 until 2013, Dan ran the company by himself, before bringing me on board. The “me” in this case is James Benesh – Dan’s brother. I had been enjoying a moderately successful career in middle management for a large insurance company but I wanted the freedom, and the challenge that came with running a business.

Between 2013 and 2015, I ran the business, with Dan’s guidance from behind the scenes, and occasional hands-on help. Once I was fully equipped with the skills and experience to do this on my own, I bought the business from Dan and have run it myself since January of 2016. We primarily sell luxury blinds and shades from Comfortex (at not-so-luxury prices), and we also offer a second line of products from Shades Deluxe, a Canadian Supplier with decent products and much lower prices. Between these two suppliers, we are able to help out any customer, regardless of their tastes or budget. We also have 19 full-sized working samples of every kind of blind and shade that we sell – in case hand-sized samples don’t do it for you.

I’ve lived in Regina my whole life and am proud to be operating a local, independent family business. My wife, Amanda, runs a preschool in our home in Whitmore Park. My daughter, Alex, is now eight years old and in grade three. Dan, always the entrepreneur, runs his new business, BarterPay (formerly known as TradeBank, recently rebranded), a business-to-business barter network.

This is my first blog post on our new website. Take a look around the site – I put a lot of work into making sure it had complete and concise information on every type of window covering we offer. I like to (half-seriously) tell people that our mission statement is to eliminate all store-bought venetian blinds from the world, one house at a time! I look forward to covering windows in Regina and the surrounding area for years to come.
